The Tribal Development Fund (TDF) Project in Mindal Valley, supported by NABARD and implemented by Himalayan Jyoti Samiti, Mussoorie, has successfully completed its five-year project period. What began as a vision to strengthen the livelihoods of tribal farming families has now started showing encouraging results in the orchards of Mindal Valley.
Over the last five years, the project helped establish 96 fruit orchards across the valley. Continuous support was provided to farmers at every stage of orchard development. This included assistance for planting material, irrigation geotanks, PVCtanks, quality seeds, bio-fertilizer, plant protection measures, farmer training programmes, and educational exposure visits. The objective was not only to plant trees but also to ensure that farmers had the knowledge and resources required to manage healthy and productive orchards.

During the project period, nearly 20,000–22,000 fruit plants were supplied under the programme. Today, those orchards have expanded naturally, and more than 40,000 fruit-bearing plants are growing across the project area. The photographs from the field clearly reflect the success of the initiative, with healthy apple orchards carrying promising fruit for the first commercial harvest.
This season marks an important milestone for the farmers of Mindal Valley. For the first time, many of these orchards are expected to produce fruit on a commercial scale, creating a new source of income for tribal households. After years of patient care and continuous technical guidance, the investment is now beginning to generate economic returns.

Himalayan Jyoti Samiti is currently assessing the total production and market value generated under the project. By the end of September, a clearer picture will emerge regarding the overall turnover achieved by the beneficiary farmers and the income generated through NABARD's support.
The success of the Mindal Valley TDF Project demonstrates how long-term investment in horticulture, combined with technical guidance and farmer participation, can transform rural livelihoods. It is also a reflection of NABARD's commitment to sustainable tribal development and inclusive growth.
As the first commercial harvest reaches the markets, the confidence of farmers in scientific horticulture and organized support systems has grown significantly. The project has not only created orchards but has also laid the foundation for long-term income generation, improved livelihoods, and a stronger rural economy in the region.
